Lidl, one of Britain’s largest and cheapest supermarket chains, alarmed many when it started experimentally piping music through several stores earlier this year. Thanks to numerous letters of protest from Pipedowners (and others), it has now abandoned these trials.

It announced: ‘While we might bring back some music for short bursts during special seasons (like the holidays), background music will no longer be a permanent fixture. We want your local Lidl to be a comfortable, stress-free environment and hope that this change helps us to achieve that for you and all of our customers.’

Proof that concerted and persistent protest can work!
